Many years ago when I began to take an interest in search engine optimization my thoughts began to lean toward what separated people that practiced SEO techniques and true elite SEO Specialists. I then finally came to the conclusion that it had to be a combination of industry knowledge, customer service, and a reputation beyond reproach. In today’s business climate and I want all now attitude by some clients, makes being successful in this field extremely difficult.
The time factors in this field sometimes alienates clients from jumping on board the SEO train. All SEO Specialists that amount to anything know that true and honest search engine optimization takes time. When sitting across from a corporate client that requires a high competition keyword to be ranked on page one and informing him or her that it will take months if not a year to achieve takes a “going all in” attitude. It would be so easy for anyone under that sort of pressure to misguide the truth.
Elite SEO Specialists have to understand that we are not going to get every contract or job. The problem may fall in the time involved or just the fact that the customer may have to maintain a Google adwords program while awaiting natural ranking. This will probably throw their advertising budget into an overtime period. Honesty is the best policy when dealing with decision makers. Do your best to explain the entire situation and why it will take as long as it will take. But also explain the rewards when page rank is achieved.
I have been asked many times why other SEO Specialists have told the same client that the time involved would be considerably less than what I had informed them to get organic page ranking. I then told the client that I felt that the previous SEO Specialists were perhaps not as well trained or informed. Be patient and show compassion when asked a question by a client. Chances are that the client is not punishing you for taking longer but they are truly confused why they are getting many conflicting reposes fro SEO Specialists.
Take great care in explaining what actions you are going to take. Make precise statements and never exaggerate. Sometimes walking away from a client will save you money and your reputation in the long run. Truly informed clients have done their research and understand what is required. Show the client how Elite SEO Specialists conduct themselves. Know your product and your limitations because your client will eventually learn what your limitations are. Take the job if know you can produce a good finished product. Walk away if your reputation is going to suffer. In the end, your reputation is all you have.
